Optimism appears to have surfaced in the oil and gas sector during the recent period from end 2016 and onwards. There has been a significant increase in sanctioned projects with around 7 PDOs (plans for development and operation) approved in 2017 and the same number 7 to date in 2018.

The main factor appears to be the increased oil price, which recovered from a "bottom" of USD 28 per barrel in January 2016, in combination with stable and predictable framework regulations for the industry and good resource potential on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

State-owned Equinor and Petoro remain the dominant owners of oil and gas assets in Norway, and we have recently seen that oil majors still remains committed to the NCS. At the same time, there is significant interest from PE backed newcomers, which are trying to increase their presence, including Chrysaor and Neptune. At the same time we experience also interest from new industrial entities, such as Dyas and Ineos.

Schjødt expect significant activity on the NCS in the years to come, across all fields of the value chain, from M&A activity and financing to exploration and development projects.
